How does your day start? The day starts with a check on what meetings are ahead for the day and a quick check in with colleagues.

What are you responsible for in your role? I oversee the operations of three teams within Adults and Children’s Financial Services and I work with internal and external partners to deliver the required services.

Why did you join Staffordshire County Council? As a big employer there were lots of opportunities to find a permanent role and to further develop my skills.

What might people not know about working here? There may be a perception that the council uses out of date ways of working, but what you’ll find is there’s a focus on change and improvement. This make us a forward thinking organisation.

What does a typical day look like in your role? My days can be quite varied but generally it will include meeting with stakeholders and building relationships, looking at changes, processes and complex cases, and developing my teams and performance.

What’s been your most memorable moment so far? That would be passing my recent apprenticeship and achieving my AAT Level 4 after years of study.

What’s the worst part of your role? As with most jobs that would be not always having enough time, but it means I have developed my prioritisation and organisation skills to manage this.

What’s the best part of your role? Working with, and engaging with a variety of different people on a day to day basis.

What would you be doing if you didn’t work at Staffordshire? If I didn’t do this I’d probably still have a job with numbers somewhere!

What advice would you give someone considering a career in finance? Remember to give some focus to developing your other skills including communication. Don’t focus solely on numbers!
